Why choosing the wrong university can lead to your GKS Application's failure.

Once or twice a week, we send you a useful GKS tip.

One common mistake GKS applicants make is not having a strategy when choosing universities. They often believe they deserve admission to a specific type of university without considering how competitive their profile actually is.

For instance, I once advised a student who questioned why he failed in the last round of the Embassy Track, which involves university evaluations. In this round, applicants select three universities, but he failed to secure acceptance from any of them. This outcome is highly unusual because typically, applicants are accepted by at least one university. Failing to pass all three suggests that while the Embassy and NIIED (National Institute for International Education) deemed him competitive, the universities he chose did not share that view. This discrepancy arises when an applicant's profile does not match the competitive standards of the chosen universities.

In this case, the student had an 85% grade average and a solid background in his field, but lacked a TOPIK or IELTS score. Such a profile might be suitable for mid-tier universities, but he applied exclusively to SKY universities (Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University), which are top-tier institutions. This mismatch explains why he was unsuccessful. Fortunately, with my guidance, he made better choices in his subsequent application. In 2023, on his second attempt, he successfully secured the GKS scholarship through our mentorship program.

This case underscores the importance of devising a thoughtful strategy when selecting universities. Regardless of your profile, a well-planned approach can greatly enhance your chances of winning the GKS scholarship.
