The different types of universities in GKS.
Once or twice a week, we send you a useful GKS tip.
Universities in Korea are not created equal. In South Korea, university names and rankings are important. It’s so important that Koreans spend their entire high school preparing for the national exam to enter the best universities in the country. Not getting into the top universities means a poor quality of life in the future. This is because graduating from a top university in Korea often leads to jobs at top companies. For many Koreans who don’t get into the top universities, they either accept that they will live a difficult life or postpone getting a job to retake the national exam once, twice, or even three times until they succeed.
This level of competition is not entirely felt by GKS applicants because they are not subject to the national exam, but it still slightly affects the evaluation.
This information is useful when choosing the right university when applying for GKS. For example, in my five years of helping students win GKS, I have identified five competition levels for universities:
- Very High Competition
- High Competition
- Medium Competition
- Low Competition
- Very Low Competition
These competition levels are heavily influenced by their ranking in Korea as well as the history of previous GKS applicants who got into them.
One way I help students win GKS is by assisting them in choosing the right competition level for the universities they should apply to.
For Embassy Track, since you can apply to three universities, my advice is to choose universities in three different levels of competition. However, which competition level it should be depends on the student’s profile. We use a very detailed approach to this in our mentorship program.
For University Track, since the student can only choose one university, the method of choosing the university is more sensitive and is divided into three options:
- Maximum Chance of being accepted
- Medium Chance of being accepted
- Low Chance of being accepted
What this means is that the student can narrow their choices to three candidate universities based on the perceived chance they will be accepted based on our data. Maximum chance usually means the university is low in ranking, while low chance means the university is highly ranked. What the student should choose depends on their preference. We help them make good decisions based on their profile.
Once the student decides on their university of choice, it’s up to them to consider their preferences, such as location, amount of additional support/benefits, number of foreign students, whether their major will be taught in English, etc.
By choosing universities this way, we maximize the student’s chances of getting accepted and winning GKS. In our five years of doing this, this method has worked 99% of the time.
