Most GKS Applicants Don't Know How To Write
GKS Applicants understandably have issues with writing their essays. Not everyone is a writer, after all. And scholarships are not something you do everyday. For this reason, most applicants, I’d wager about 80%, actually don’t know how to write a good essay.
Let me give you an example of how students write. The snippet below is from the Letter of Recommendation written by one of my students in our mentorship program. Names and other nouns are redacted for privacy. Currently, we are writing the draft of letter of recommendation which my students will send to their recommenders for signature.
This is the snippet:

These are the comments I gave this student:
🚨 "I have found her bright and creative, so I chose her to be my subordinate. She proved to be a quick and eager learner thus she achieved an excellent result on the end-year performance."
My comment: What was the project? What exact actions have you done? Show us and tell us the process you had to undergo. Don’t just tell us the results.
🚨 "She also showed great devotion as she maintained every task diligently and showed responsibility in each job she undertook"
My comment: How? What was the task?
🚨 "Despite the uncertainty of working hours and tight deadlines, she also consistently maintained a cheerful and positive attitude towards the team"
My comment: How exactly was this done? Who was the team? What’s your role? You’re just telling us the results without bringing us in the story. We cannot sympathize, and we cannot understand the difficulties you have gone through if you don’t tell us what really happened during those times.
🚨 "negotiate with related divisions"
My comment: How was this performed?
🚨 "she handled a request"
My comment: How was this request handled? What were the difficulties and how did you solve it? We need to understand how you solve and deal with problems.
As you can see, the main problem with students is they talk about results instead of the process. If GKS wants to know your results, they will ask for a resume. But they don’t. They want to know how you arrived at those results. You need to provide examples and details. Bring us to the event, make us feel what you felt, see what you saw.
This applies to the Personal Statement and Study Plan/Statement of Purpose as well.
In our mentorship, we help students write these essays perfectly and they also receive access to the previous winners’ essays and documents so they can see how the winning essays look like.
