This is how I review students' essays.

Issue No. 12

Many of you are probably curious how I review my private coaching students’ essays. Today I will show you how I do it.

First, when I read the student’s essay for the first time, I see multiple mistakes:

  • Boring first sentence

  • Terrible first paragraph that doesn’t introduce the theme

  • No chronological order

  • No structure

  • Scattered information

  • Useless information

  • Sentences with no substance

  • Characteristics without evidence

  • Experiences not explained with detail

  • No persuasive element

  • Generic motivation for pursuing major

  • Vague goals

  • Too long or too short

  • No underlying story

  • No satisfying conclusion

These are just some of the issues that can arise in your essay and yet so many students fail to write it properly. I cannot blame them for they are not trained to write a scholarship essay everyday. That’s why academic coaches exist in the US. They help students pass the university applications by helping them write the essays that

best work for each university. In my coaching program for GKS, that’s exactly what I do. Instead of charging thousands of dollars, I limited it to $95 so it’s affordable to many. In fact, the value my coaching provides should be $500 for each student because it includes unlimited essay review and 24/7 communication with me. You cannot find these tips anywhere on the internet but in my coaching program because they are a result of 5 years of studying GKS applicants. No one has done it before. And because of my efforts, I successfully helped more than 120 students pass GKS. Yearly more students are added to this long list. Second, let’s discuss how I review the essays. It looks something like this:

As you can see, I read it sentence per sentence. I make sure the essay is dissected and complete. I check the grammar, the spellings, the tone, the motivations, the underlying meaning, the substance, everything. I do this because I like what I do and whenever I help a student pass GKS, I feel proud because I have a direct effect on their success in life.

90% of the students who submit their essays to me for review think their essays are good. In reality, they are not. They think it’s good because they are the only ones who read it. It’s a form of bias. You need to show your essay to someone else so you can get another perspective on it. When I applied to GKS, I showed it to my english teachers, to my friends, to my parents, and to my then girlfriend. All of them had useful feedback but there is nothing more helpful if the person reading it has reviewed more than 1,000 essays for GKS. And that’s my job. Every day I read GKS essays from my students so every day I am learning new things on how to improve it. I have found patterns that work and elements that do not.

Finally, I hope that you write a good essay because it’s about 30% of the criteria. It’s your first impression to GKS so write it well.
