The secret to winning GKS.

Issue No. 16

Many of you have asked me on my social media, “how to win GKS”?

I always say there are many factors to consider, such as where you’re from, your grades, your country, the track you’re choosing, the university choices, your awards, how your essay is written, etc. Yes, those are very important factors that you can improve. That’s why I’ve built a coaching program for it, which has helped more than 120 students pass GKS.

But, if there is one thing that can significantly increase your chances of passing GKS outside of those things mentioned above, it would be being genuine.

Hold on, it’s not some vague advice. Let me explain.

Whenever I read my students’ essays and review them to perfection, the first thing I notice is they pretend to know a lot of things or they try to impress. You would find sentences that look like this:

“When I get this scholarship and study in Korea, I will be able to change the world and help strengthen the bilateral relationship between my country and Korea by studying and learning more about solar technology. This is my passion. I will be a leader in my field and make sure that I give back to Korea whenever and however I can. I will also become an ambassador of Korea’s Hallyu wave and help Korea’s tourism and make it known to the world.”

In hindsight, that sounds amazing. But in reality, this type of sentence, alongside many others, has ZERO substance. Why? Because they are not realistic, they are distant from your individual capabilities. You cannot change the world in a few years. Bill Gates took several decades to achieve it, and you, you think you can do it in 3-5 years? Please.

Be realistic, be genuine. Let’s rephrase that paragraph above:

“Because of the advancements in the renewable energy sector in South Korea, I am confident that I can participate in learning more about technologies that can improve the efficiency of solar cells, as I did in my country. If we can improve its efficiency even by about 1% and decrease maintenance requirements, this is enough proof to continue research in this area. I would like to learn new material advancements to make this possible. Because Korea has companies such as SK and LG that focus on this, it is only logical for me to study in Korea for the next 3 years at the Master's level. After my studies, I would pursue deeper research in the mentioned companies. This scholarship will make all of this possible.”

See the difference? The new paragraph shows you know something deep about your field; that you are not just going to Korea to watch Kpop concerts or travel to Jeju. You are going to Korea to study. Your motivation should be about education, about your career. Show them you are passionate by giving them the details of what you know. Don’t give them the surface level. Bring them to your level, show them what you are passionate about instead of just telling them “I am passionate about this.” They need to know why and how.

The secret to winning GKS is being genuine, and when you are genuine, the story you write in your essay becomes unique because those experiences you have are unique to you.
