How GKS can change your life.

When I was around 16, my parents could no longer support my education to college. I spent a few semesters in college but stopped completely. We had no money. My parents were divorced. It’s tragic because I spent most of my 16 years of life studying every day and every night. I was groomed to be academically competitive only to hit a wall stopping me from moving forward. I have heard this story from many of you before and there’s no better person to understand you than me.

At the age of 17, I decided I have to make it by myself. No one else is going to save me. So I did. I applied to several scholarship programs abroad only to fail multiple times. I had less than $2 in my pocket when I went to a computer cafe to search for another scholarship. That’s when I found GKS (it was called KGSP) back then. I applied for the first time in 2015. I failed. And it was miserable because I was the 3rd in the list. They accepted the Top 2. I was one step closer.

I called NIIED and the Embassy to consider me even as waitlisted applicant. They couldn’t help me as it’s the rule. I understood what was really happening: reality cannot bend to my will if I don’t actively pursue it.

So, for the next 12 months, I prepared relentlessly. I studied Korean.

I competed in several competitions, improved my interviewing skills, studied previous winners’ profiles, essays, recommendation letters. I studied their backgrounds and found patterns. I applied those patterns to my application and when 2016 application arrived, I was accepted to GKS. In fact, at that time, I passed both Embassy and University Tracks because there was no rule prohibiting it. NIIED had to call me and made me choose one track. The following year, NIIED added that rule. I like to believe it was because of me.

For 5 years, I studied in Korea. So many doors have opened for me. I remember in the Philippines, as a 16-year old, I was walking in the sidewalk with coins in my hand thinking how far I can go in life. I felt alone. My friends studied in the best universities in the country. But now, I feel like a different person. Now I have my own company, I have published a book, my mentor is a multi-million dollar CEO, and I am surrounded with wealthy, intelligent people. These days I am starting 2 other companies intending to make them million-dollar ones in the next 5 years. When I realized my position in life allows to have opportunities to come to me, I never hesitated and grabbed them all.

Right now, I dedicate some of my time to helping students achieve the same level of success in their life. I know money is not everything but when you’re born in a poor neighborhood, that’s all you’re going to think about not for yourself but for your family.

This is why I started Scholars Academie, a coaching program just for you, a dreamer. You can make it too. I am not special. I’m just like you. Only that now, you have someone who can actually help you and be there for you whereas, I was alone in my journey.
