How competitive is GKS?
Issue No. 22
GKS is a competitive scholarship program. But many students don’t know just how competitive it is in reality. Let me give you an overview.
First, a total of about 100,000 students apply to GKS every year for each level: Undergraduate or Graduate.
An average number of quota per country is around 7. Some countries will have as much as 15 or more but it’s offset by countries with less than 5. For the sake of this analysis, let’s consider it 7.
Most countries receive an average of 1,000 applications. 95% of these don’t even reach the document screening round because they are removed from the list due to poor numerical evaluation factors: grades, ranking of previous school, etc. Remember when I said GKS is a point-based system? This is where it starts.
Only 5% or to put simply, 50 out of 1,000 applicants from your country reach document screening for both Embassy and University Track. Out of this 50, only 7 will be chosen. This puts the passing rate to 0.7% on average.
0.7% is your chance to win the scholarship.
You have more chance to win a scholarship in your country than in GKS. Yet many students overestimate themselves thinking they have about 50% chance. It cannot be farther from the truth. Many students apply 5 times and still cannot get it. I applied 2 times. I was fortunate to be obsessed with it that I studied 1,000 profiles so I got in on my 2nd try. If you’re not as obsessed with GKS as I was, you’re depending too much in luck.
For Embassy track, the factors that matter the most are your essays, your grade, your recommendation letter, your school, your awards, and your interview performance. (Scholars Academie helps students get more awards to be more competitive in Embassy Track as well as train them for interview). Embassy track is competitive only because you’re competing with other students in your country. University track, however, is another story. You are not just competing with other students from your country, you’re also competing with students from other countries who passed the 1st round. This puts your competition at maximum and most students apply without a strategy so they are really applying blindly. Scholars Academie built a strategy that helped 120+ students pass GKS so we know what we are doing when helping students choose the best university and track.
Now, you can see why 0.7% chance of winning GKS makes proper sense.
At Scholars Academie, we increase this chance to a maximum by as much as 90% by helping students apply the best strategies we have learned when we studied 2,000 profiles from winners and failed applicants and when we spent time reading and studying 1,000+ essays from the previous winners.

This 90% more chance have helped 120+ students of ours win GKS successfully and now they are enjoying their lives in Korea that have now forever changed.
