Stop writing this in your GKS essay.

A lot of students use the Korean War as a narrative for explaining why they appreciate Korean Culture. It would go something like this in their essay:

One of the major reasons I chose South Korea to have my higher education is their resilience and innovation after the Korean war. I really admire Koreans’ spirit and hard work. Because of this, they emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world with advanced technology and society.

I guarantee you, at least 70% of the students who will apply for GKS will mention a similar passage in their essay. When students join my coaching program, if I see this passage I just slap my hand to my face. It shows you know NOTHING about Korea. You haven’t searched enough things about what makes Korea a good place to study. If you write the same, your essay will not be unique and thus will easily be disregarded.

Instead of mentioning the Korean war, mention a part of Korean culture that is related to your major. For example, instead of saying: "I really am amazed by the Korean Culture especially the importance they gave for education since the Korean War of the 1950s blah blah blah"

Write something like this:

"One of the major aspects of the Korean Culture that made me want to get higher education there is the advancements in petroleum and superconductors industry. These particular scenes in my field would help me reach my professional goals as I move on to even higher education or academic level"

Just add a bit more details that show your understanding of your major.

That’s how you impress them. It will show your purpose for studying Korea is not to just live the Korean life but also to prioritize your education so you emerge as a successful contributor to society. Show them they are choosing a student who is committed to education. Show them your passion for it.
